The Yachties We Met

When you set out on an adventure like this, you do get anxious about being alone and missing your friends back home. Yes we do miss them, but it has surprised us how many others are doing the same thing.

We also met a lot of people who leave their boat in France, and come out here for sailing in the summers season. We will do our best to mention you all here and in our blog. If we miss you out, please accept our apology and do let us know so we can add you in.

This page is primarily people we met who live on their boat most of the year and we have spent some considerable time with.

At our very first real stay in France, at Port Tudy, we berthed next to an English couple who were making there way back to the south coast. They were both in their 80's and sailed out and back each year.

After a recent hip replacement and broken leg (not sailing) they said this could be their last trip.

I do hope they are doing well, they were inspirational. Unfortunately, we did not get their names.

Jenny & John

After we left the Fareham-Vannes flotilla we first met Jenny and John on their boat Jublilante at Port Crouesty.  It is a Westerly Storm.

They have been sailing these waters for nearly 10 years and so they were able to suggest things to watch out for and take advantage of.

We were able to share with them the awful weather we had in the August and September. We sailed with them to Port Haliguen  and then back to Crouesty as I had to go back to the UK in September.

We met up with them again in June 2016 at La Rochelle. They joined us on a trip to the Dordogne and we sailed in flotilla to St.Denis. They also gave us a lift back to La Rochelle so we could pick our car up.

Megan & Jim

We had seen Megan and Jim's boat Magnet in Port Haliguen, but actually met up with them in Redon, where they spent the winter. We then learned that this was their first serious trip on Magnet having spent 10 years building the boat in their back garden in Belfast.

They stayed in Redon a lot longer than us, so they were able to keep an eye on Scallywag. They fixed our cover when it ripped, made sure the electric stayed on and made our stay much more enjoyable.

We met up again with them in St. Denis in June 2016. Here they joined us on a car trip to la Rochelle and together we made the 165 mile, 33 hour sail to Hendaye.

After spending a few days in Hendaye with us they went on to Bilbao and we met them there for lunch in July.

The Magnet Blog is here.

Maggie & Paul

In Redon we also met Maggie and Paul with their boat Avanti. They too kept an eye on our boat and met up with us in Estepona and Arzal. The year 2016 was to be their second year in France having sailed from the Isle of Wight in 2015. They spend all year on their boat but are still exploring the French coast.

Jan & Corrie

We met Jan and Corrie on our return to Redon and then again in Arzal. Hailing from Holland, they are sailing their 45ft boat Livingstone. We had some lovely social evening with them and met up in La Turballe too. However, they are really adventurous and pushed on south as they wanted to be down in the Canaries and Cape Verde for the winter to sail across to the Caribbean.
